ROCK SPRINGS, WY — Sweetwater County Commissioner Island Richards visited the Sweetwater County Courthouse today where he filed his official paperwork declaring his candidacy for re-election to the position of Sweetwater County Commissioner. Richards, a lifelong Republican who has served in the role since taking office in 2023, filed on May 26, 2026 to once again seek the Republican nomination for the office.
Reflecting on his first term, Commissioner Richards emphasized his ongoing commitment to fiscal discipline, core county services, and long-term financial stability.
"Over the last four years, Sweetwater County has faced real economic challenges, including declining revenues and shifting valuations," Richards said. "As your commissioner, I have focused on practical, steady leadership. I have consistently supported the tough budget decisions necessary to protect essential services without overspending taxpayer dollars. We have proven that county government can live within its means, respect private property rights, and still build a pro-growth environment for local families and businesses."
During his time in office, Richards has built a strong track record of tangible results for the county. His first term highlights include:
Economic Vitality: Helping bring millions of dollars into Sweetwater County through strategic Industrial Siting agreements and infrastructure coordination, and working to build a stable and growing economy by serving on the Board of Directors for the Sweetwater County Economic Development Coalition.
State and Local Leadership: Serving on the Wyoming Air Quality Advisory Board to help advance practical rules that protect producers while still protecting our clean air and maintaining compliance with EPA regulations, and also serving on the Energy and Environment Committee of the Wyoming County Commissioners Association.
"Filing the paperwork today is the official start of the next chapter," Richards added. "But effective leadership isn’t just about making hard choices at the courthouse. It is about listening to the people back home in Rock Springs, Green River, and across our rural communities. I look forward to earning the vote of every Sweetwater County resident over the coming months so we can keep our county moving responsibly in the right direction."
